If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve probably noticed me babbling a lot lately about my hair. Well, there’s a reason why. A good reason, in my opinion.

While I was on maternity leave, I decided to take a leap of faith and start a side hustle selling hair products for a company called MONAT. I never imagined myself getting into the direct sales world because, to be completely honest, multi-level marketing always made me cringe. Now, I’m so glad I did. I’ll go into more details about the business in a few, but first, let me tell you the back story…
HOW I GOT INVOLVED: THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA
Rewind back to February when I was about 31 weeks pregnant. One day, while trying to find inspiration for Brooklyn’s nursery, searching hashtags, I stumbled upon this beautiful girl’s Instagram handle. Nicola Nelson. She was also in her third trimester, expecting a little girl. Of course, I started Insta-stalking Nicola and began watching some of her highlighted stories, including one about “hair” and another about “opportunity.” She shared a before and after picture showing how these magical products had given her the best hair of her life. She then said her hair more than tripled within one year of using MONAT.

Within a few weeks of following her, I started to notice how amazing Nicola’s life seemed. She lives in dreamy Canyon Lake, California in a golf cart community. However, that wasn’t the part that really caught my attention. It was how she often shared photos of her working on a laptop, poolside. Or on the couch, while her husband worked on their daughter’s nursery. Or on the beach, while vacationing. [Fun fact: She started making so much money selling MONAT that she was able to quit her normal job after less than six months of joining the company. She is now making six figures after being with the company for one year. ONE YEAR, Y’ALL.]
I learned through following Nicola on Instagram that she decided to use MONAT to fix her hair, but wanted to sell MONAT for more financial freedom. Her husband is a firefighter and when she first started with the company he was working crazy hours. She wanted him home more and to not have to pick up so many extra shifts. She also wanted to be able to be at home with her little girl.
She seemed so genuine, which is sometimes rare these days on Instagram.
Then, as she was 35 weeks pregnant, this magical hair company she kept talking about gave her a FREE Cadillac. Yes, I said FREE. A brand new mom-mobile as she was getting ready to have a baby. She shared that news on Instagram on March 27, the day my daughter, Brooklyn, was born.
I spent the next six weeks incredibly sleep-deprived, caring for a newborn and trying to breastfeed. I was also on baby watch, anxiously watching Instagram for Nicola’s little one to arrive too. [How creepy am I? I didn’t even know her!]
One day during my maternity leave, something snapped inside me after looking in the mirror while taking a break from binge-watching “Game of Thrones.” My hair was a hot mess with huge chunks of damage, likely from years of using a curling iron as well as harsh chemicals. I also started thinking about postpartum hair loss and how it freaked me out. [What was I using you ask? GOOD salon-quality products, but they weren’t doing the job.] Then, I thought about how nice it would be to have some extra cash, considering the disturbing amount of money I was spending on Amazon Prime. [Babies are so expensive, y’all. Worth every penny, but we’re talkin’ a shit ton of pennies!]
On May 6, after about three months of thinking about it, I decided to give MONAT a try, as a consumer and a seller. So, I finally reached out to Nicola. [May 6 was also the day Nicola had her little girl, Ivy June.]

I have loved MONAT since the first wash. I have a thick head of fine hair with lots of breakage and split ends. I’ve been using the products since late May and I can already see a difference. My hair feels softer, healthier and is noticeably shinier!
In the above comparison, the photo on the left was from my baby shower. I was wearing clip-in extensions. On the right, my hair looks much healthier without any extensions.
